South Iredell’s offense was a lot of things on Friday.
It was surprisingly explosive through the air. It was sloppy at times, with four lost fumbles.
And when it mattered most, South pounded the football, taking valuable time off the clock and leaving Lake Norman’s high-octane offense on the sidelines.
The Vikings scored two long touchdowns in the final 13 minutes and held the ball for most of the third quarter to break a 21-all halftime tie and emerge with a 34-21 win over Lake Norman.
Anthony Thwaites ran for 221 yards, and the usual pound-the-rock Vikings offense did its best impression of Lake Norman’s aerial assault. Quarterback T.C. Rollings was 7-for-9 for 182 yards and three touchdowns.
“I was proud of the offense in that we got the mixture of (run and pass) that we’ve been looking for,” South coach Ed Masterton said. “But we have to have a huge effort in fixing those turnovers.”
South fumbled on the first play of two consecutive possessions in the first half and found itself in a 14-7 hole midway through the second quarter.
After the kickoff to start the second half, the Vikings marched 60 yards in 14 plays and took nearly seven minutes off the clock before losing the ball at the Lake Norman 3-yard line.
But South’s defense held Lake Norman to less than 50 total yards in the second half and began to slow running back Eric Manser, who had 73 rushing yards in the first half.
“Lake Norman is very tough to defend,” Masterton said. “I think when we stopped the run and forced them to pass, that gave us an (edge).”
T. Dalton’s 24-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter gave South a 27-21 lead and showed South’s coaches weren’t afraid to go deep on non-passing down situations. Dalton’s 24-yarder came on second and 2, and he caught a 45-yard score in the first half on first and 10.
Thwaites scored from 62 yards out on third and 7 late in the game to ice it.
“It was a good first half, and South Iredell’s offense and defense played a good second half,” Lake Norman head coach Scott Sherrill said. “Against a good defense, we felt like we moved the ball well. The called penalties hurt us.”
Manser ran for a team-high 87 yards, and Zach Connell completed 10 passes for 139 yards.
