Trick play seals win for Wonders
By Steve Winzenread
KANNAPOLIS - Forget about a touchdown.
The Wonders needed a first down.
And it took a reverse pass to get it as undefeated A.L. Brown rallied for a 29-26 nonconference win over Mooresville.
The 40-yard pass from T.J. Johnson to Dominique Norris set up a two-yard run by Terrance Johnson that put the Wonders ahead for the final time with 4:34 left.
“They played the reverse pass as well as you could play it down here and Dominique Norris makes a great adjustment on the ball and makes a good catch,” said Wonders head coach Ron Massey.
The pass was the first of only two first downs for the Wonders in the final two quarters.
Kannapolis started the winning drive at the 50 after Zach Massey recovered a fumbled punt by the Blue Devils.
It was part of a miserable special teams night for Mooresville (1-1), which surrendered two kickoff returns for touchdowns by Artrelle Louis.
“I got on him a little this week because I know what he can do,” Ron Massey said of Louis. “He works so hard in practice. He’s a great kid. I told him, ‘Tonight you’ve just got to turn it loose.’
“The two kickoff returns looked like instant replay.”
Louis’ return to open the game went for 86 yards, then after the Wonders fell behind 19-15, he broke an 87-yarder in the fourth quarter.
“We lost this football game on three special teams plays,” said Mooresville head coach Barclay Marsh. “We dropped a punt, and those kickoff returns. Take those out and I feel like we’re in real good shape.”
Louis, who gained 104 yards rushing on 16 carries, also scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter. Quarterback Jonathan Efird ran for the two points and a 15-12 lead.
The Blue Devils led 12-7, 19-15 and 26-22.
“I don’t know if we can play any better offensively,” Marsh said.
“Their defense is unbelievable. and we played great. The second half I thought our defense played good.”
Mooresville running back Jjshaun Pinkston scored the first two times he touched the ball, on runs of 65 and 51 yards.
“It put us in shock a little bit because nobody had done that to us,” Massey said.
Pinkston ended with 210 yards on 20 carries.
Mooresville added two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, both to Jamel Allison.
Nathan Abraham threw a 16-yard scoring pass, and Jon Crucitti connected with Allison for a 37-yard touchdown that put Mooresville ahead with 8:43 left.
The Blue Devils (1-1) had one final chance to rally, starting from their 39-yard line after a kickoff.
On fourth-and-six, Crucitti scrambled for 18 yards to the Wonders’ 39 to keep the drive going.
But Crucitti was sacked on both third down and fourth down to end the threat, with Fred Glenn making both tackles.
“Fred has those moments,” Massey said. “He’s quick.”
The Wonders (3-0) needed three plays to run for their second first down of the half, then they ran out the clock.
“I told Barclay at halftime, ‘You take 7 (Pinkston) out and I’ll take 8 (Louis) out and we’ll play the rest of the football game.” Massey said. “Both of those kids are exceptional athletes.
“It was a great football game.”
