Intimidators near .500

Staff report

The Kannapolis Intimidators won their sixth straight game Sunday, topping the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-1 in South Atlantic League action.

Nearing a .500 record, Kannapolis (17-19) scored three runs in the top of the second inning and added one each in the sixth and the eighth.

Kannapolis is now in fifth place in the Southern Division, 9 1/2 games behind first-place Augusta.

Savannah falls further in the division’s cellar at 8-27 on the season.

Four of the I’s runs came off Savannah starter Gregory Mullens.

I’s starter Ricky Brooks, who gave up one run in six innings, improved to 2-3 on the year.

Intimidators Mike Grace and Lee Cruz each had two hits for Kannapolis, which tallied seven total.

The I’s will play the third game of a five-game series today in Savannah before returning home to Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium for a four-game series against Lexington.

That homestand begins Wednesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
