Veterans for Johnson to rally in Newton

Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland will campaign with 10th District Congressional candidate Daniel Johnson on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Johnson and Cleland will discuss how Johnson’s lifetime of public service, from his service to the state of North Carolina as a prosecutor to his outstanding military record, will make him an effective representative for Western North Carolina.

August 23rd is Johnson’s “Alive Day,” the ninth anniversary of when he lost both of his legs while rescuing a fellow sailor who had become entangled in the line from a tugboat.
After recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center, Johnson worked for Cleland, focusing on veterans and military affairs.

In Congress, Johnson will fight to ensure that military men and women receive the resources they need on the battlefield and the care they deserve when they come home.

The Veterans for Johnson rally will be at noon at American Legion Post 48, the largest American Legion Post in North Carolina, of which Johnson is a member.

Cleland served as a U.S. senator from Georgia from 1997 to 2003 and as the head of the Veterans Administration from 1977 to 1981.

Cleland earned the Bronze Star and Silver Star during his service in Vietnam, where he lost three limbs.

Post 48 is at 1127 U.S. 70 West, Newton.
