Lieutenant governor to address local Democrats

NEWTON

The Catawba County Democratic Party will hold its annual county convention this Saturday at the 1924 Courthouse in downtown Newton.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., the meeting starts promptly at 10 a.m. and the group will hold a covered-dish picnic following the business meeting.

Keynote speaker for the event will the Honorable Walter Dalton, newly elected lieutenant governor of North Carolina.

A native of Rutherford, Dalton served six terms in the N.C. Senate as a powerful Western North Carolina voice in Raleigh before being elected lieutenant governor last year. He has worked to improve schools, introduce new programs such as Learn and Earn high schools, broaden health care coverage for children and seniors, and expand the state parks system.

Dalton will be first on Saturday’s agenda, followed by the election of new county officers, electing delegates to the 10th District Democratic Party Convention and electing members to the North Carolina Democratic Party Executive Committee.

The county convention is open to all registered Democrats. Delegates elected at their precinct meetings will have a vote in all party business. Other guest speakers include N.C. House 88th District Rep. Ray Warren, other Democrats holding elected office in Catawba County, and outgoing county chairman Dan Green.
