Legislator says no to illegal immigrants at community colleges
North Carolina’s Board of Community Colleges has decided to hire a consultant to study whether or not the state should allow illegal immigrants to attend North Carolina’s 58 state-supported community colleges.
In the meantime, the board will continue a directive issued in May that prohibits admission of illegal immigrants to the state’s community colleges.
State Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) last week wrote a letter to the members of the Board of Community Colleges urging them to vote against admitting illegal immigrants.
“The decision on whether or not to allow illegal immigrants in our community college system is very straightforward; I don’t know what a consultant needs to study. Illegal immigrants should not be rewarded with the benefit of admission to our taxpayer-supported community colleges.
“Democrats should deal with this issue now and not use an expensive, taxpayer-funded study as an excuse to wait until after the November election. Taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for this ‘study’ as it is a tremendous waste of money.”
Phil Berger represents the 26th N.C. Senatorial District. Reach him at 919-733-5708, or at North Carolina Senate, 1026 Legislative Building, Raleigh, N.C. 27601.
