Gov. Perdue proclaims Women’s History Month

RALEIGH

In recognition of the extraordinary accomplishments of women in North Carolina, Gov. Bev Perdue has proclaimed March as Women’s History Month.

Starting with Lillian Exum of Buncombe County, who in 1920 became the first female state legislator in the South, to last fall’s election of Perdue as the state’s 73rd and first female chief executive, women have succeeded in helping to make North Carolina a leader in a vast array of career fields.

“I urge all citizens to seek opportunities to educate themselves on the many struggles women overcame in the pursuit of equality,” Perdue said in the proclamation.

The N.C. Council for Women/Domestic Violence Commission provides advocacy services for women through the N.C. Department of Administration. It administers grant funding and monitors grants to county programs (abuser treatment, displaced homemaker, domestic violence and sexual assault). CFW/DVC also educates lawmakers, advocates and the public on women’s issues.
