Four polling sites open for early voters

HICKORY - Early voting remained slower than expected Monday as all four sites opened across the county.

Catawba County Board of Elections officials said turnout was light at Highland Recreation Center in Hickory, Southwest Library in Mountain View and Sherrills Ford Fire and Rescue.

Activity was higher at Newton’s Main Library site, which historically is the busiest. However, overall turnout hasn’t matched the political buzz of local and presidential politics.

“I thought the turnout would be heavier,” said Board of Elections Director Larry Brewer.

A transmitting problem at several sites kept his office from registering complete numbers through Monday, although by 10 a.m. only nine people had cast ballots in Sherrills Ford.

Some people were taking advantage of one-stop voting by registering and casting their ballots in one visit.

A few folks also attempted to change parties, something not allowed after voting begins.

Early voting lasts through May 3. The primary is May 6.
