Catawba County Democrats plan inaugural gala in Hickory

With more than 4 million people expected to attend inaugural events in Washington, D.C., Catawba County Democrats are offering a local alternative.

An inaugural gala is planned for Jan. 24 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at Hickory’s Gateway Center at Park Inn.

Hosted by the Catawba County Democratic Party, the event is expected to draw attendance from a 10-county area. Festivities include a buffet dinner, cash bar, live music, dancing, keynote speaker and an inaugural keepsake button.

Music will be provided by Centerpiece Jazz Quartet highlighting local musicians Dick Hull, Joseph Hasty and special guest Elizabeth Glynn. The Keynote speaker is Dannie Montgomery, first vice chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party.

The date was selected for the Saturday following the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama so people who plan to attend events in Washington can also attend the local gala.
Throughout the evening, there will be photo projections of campaign and inaugural events from N.C. counties, Raleigh and Washington.

The event is sponsored by Mitchell Gold, Ray McKinnon, Jody and Rebecca Inglefield, Ray Mills, Jane Johnson and state Rep. Ray Warren. Additional sponsors will be recognized at the event.

Limited tickets are available and must be purchased in advance. Cost is $35 each for tickets ordered through Saturday, and $45 each for tickets ordered afterward.
