A Closer Look at Tuesday’s Election

A CLOSER LOOK AT TUESDAY’S ELECTION:

Catawba County Board of Commissioners
• Commissioner Dan Hunsucker led the voting in 37 of the county’s 40 precincts. Fellow commissioner Barbara Beatty won East Newton, Sherrills Ford and Lake Norman precincts.
• Challenger Jack Beach beat Beatty in eight precincts.
• Beach and Phillip Parlier faced a daunting task. Only one incumbent, Russ Perkins in 1992, has lost a re-election bid since 1980.

N.C. Senate - 42nd District
• Incumbent Austin Allran won every Catawba County precinct but two. The candidates tied with two votes each in Ridgeview. Barnes edged Allran by a single vote, 211-210, in Sherrills Ford.
• Banoak, Conover West, Maiden, Sandy Ridge and both Mountain View precincts were Allran’s best precincts.


U.S. Congress 10th District - Republicans
• Incumbent Patrick McHenry performed best in Banoak, Mountain View and St. Stephens precincts.
• Challenger Lance Sigmon polled well in Conover, South Newton and the Springs Road precinct.
• McHenry took 29 of 40 precincts in Catawba County despite a close 51-49 percent breakdown.

U.S. Congress 10th District - Democrats
• Hickory’s Daniel Johnson won all 40 precincts over Steve Ivester.
• Johnson dominated Hickory precincts such as College Park, Kenworth, Oakwood, Ridgeview and Viewmont, gaining more than 75 percent of the vote in each. Conover, Mountain View, Springs Road and Startown were also areas of strength for Johnson.

U.S. President - Democrats
• Hillary Clinton took 31 of 40 precincts in Catawba County.
• Clinton scored well in Lake Norman, Oxford, Claremont and Banoak precincts.
• Obama’s best precincts included Greenmont, Kenworth and Ridgeview, where he took approximately 95 percent of the vote.

Turnout
• Oakwood, Ridgeview, Oakland Heights, Viewmont 1, Northwest and West Newton precincts exceeded 40 percent turnout.
• The lowest turnout was Sweetwater precinct at 22 percent, followed by North Newton at 25 percent.
• More votes were cast in the Democratic primary (14,909) of the 10th District Congressional race than the Republican primary (13,816).
