Banking legend runs for N.C. House

John ForlinesHis news release Tuesday accurately began with the phrase “In a surprise political announcement.” Retired banking legend John Forlines, a Democrat, filed as a challenger for the 87th House District seat held by Edgar Starnes. The district comprises most of Caldwell County.
Forlines will make his first bid for political office at 90. If elected, he’ll likely become the oldest member of the N.C. House. The oldest sitting member is Dewey Hill of Whiteville, who is 82. The all-time oldest member was Ruth Easterling, who ended her service in 2002 at 92.
Several area political insiders were surprised by Forlines’ move, though some within the Democratic Party knew he was considering it.

This is the news story that will appear in Wednesday’s print edition.

North Carolina Representative Ray Warren Files for Re-election

N.C. Rep. Ray Warren filed for re-election this week for his 88th District House seat. Warren, a former Alexander County Sheriff, became one of the few Democrats from this area to win election to the General Assembly. Warren defeated Republican incumbent Mark Hollo, a Taylorsville physician’s assistant, in 2006. The contest proved to be one of that year’s closest races. This year’s rematch could be just as competitive.
The 88th District includes all of Alexander County and roughly 90 percent of Hickory.

The following is Warren’s release from Feb. 19.

“I have decided to run at the urging of Republicans, Independents, and conservative Democrats, who want to see change in Raleigh.  We must have leaders with the courage to hold state government accountable for wasting the public’s hard-earned tax dollar.”
